The Language Centre at Ysgol Pantycelyn was established in September, 1988. Its aim was to provide assistance with the number of non-Welsh latecomers that were moving into the primary schools.
In Carmarthenshire the Language Centre at Llandovery was the first to be established in the county and there are now six such centres in Carmarthenshire, at Ammanford, Whitland, Gwendraeth, Tregib and Bro Myrddin schools. The primary children who attend the Llandovery Centre all come from the feeder primary schools of Ysgol Pantycelyn.
The purpose of the Language Centre is to create in the children a respect and awareness of the new language, area, and culture so that they appreciate the purpose of learning the language. The children are introduced to the appropriate language skills, which will assist them to integrate into their new school and community. The whole scheme is geared to enabling primary children to settle in more easily into their new environment and to ensure that their educational development is enhanced.
Since the National Curriculum was established in the primary sector the Language Centre has extended its Welsh courses. It now provides various courses for Latecomers, Improvers and assisting natural Welsh speakers and Learners as they prepare to embarke on Year 7.
The teacher in charge of the Language Centre works very closely with the primary schools. Pupils attend the Language Centre for a whole day once a week and gain a great deal of confidence from this experience. This ensures the success of the centre in assisting in the rise in the number of children who are able to speak Welsh on entering Year 7.
