Music

Head of Department Mr Philip Watkins.

The music department in Ysgol Gyfun Pantycelyn is able to offer a wide ranging programme of study which enables pupils to develop their particular interest in this subject.

Peripatetic tuition is available in the following instruments:- BRASS, STRINGS, WOODWIND, GUITAR, RECORDER, HARP and PIANO.  Pupils are taught on a rotation basis and there are opportunities for pupils to play in ensembles such as the STRING GROUP, BRASS GROUP, GUITAR GROUP and WOODWIND GROUP.

There are opportunities for all pupils in the school to become members of the school choir.  Members of the choir take part in school activities such as the Carol service, School Eisteddfod, Musical productions and Urdd Eisteddfod Competitions.

All pupils study Music in years 7, 8 and 9, while pupils in year 10 opt for Music as an examination subject at GCSE level.

Pupils in year 12 are able to select Music as an examination subject at either A or A/S level.

Pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 follow studies according to the National Curriculum.

The three main sections of this course are: - PERFORMING, COMPOSING and APPRAISING.  The study of these topics will assist pupils to develop a wide interest in all aspects of musical studies.

Studies at GCSE and ADVANCED LEVEL are according to the WELSH JOINT EDUCATION COMMITTEE syllabus.

The Music Department enjoyed a 100% A - B pass rate at GCSE and also a 100% pass rate at A/S and A level last year. Other examination results with the Royal School of Music, Trinity College of Music and Rock School are as follows:-

Music Department concerts this year have included the Llandovery Cancer Research evening, the Christian Aid Concert, the School Production and the School Carol Service. Some 120 pupils were heard in the School Eisteddfod prelims which led to a very successful Eisteddfod. Performances were also given in the Year 7 Open Evening. Pupils represented the school in the Urdd Eisteddfod Sara Evans, Mirain Tomos, Menna Davies, Sioned Harries and Harry Griffiths took part in the Urdd Morning Service which was accompanied by a band which included Heledd Watkins and Elin Rees The Urdd production Dagrau'r Coed included Sian Williams, Rhian Davies, Telor Dyer, Lowri Pugh-Morgan and Heledd Watkins. There were 3 performances to capacity audiences.  Meleri Jones and Elin Jones took part in the Llyfr Du, Caerfyrddin Production.

The School Choral ensemble came second in the first round of the Urdd Eisteddfod with the Cerdd Dant Group reaching the final. The String Group came second in the first round. Owen Griffiths, Rhian Davies, Lowri Pugh-Morgan, Sara Morgan and Elin Rees reached the Urdd final as soloists and in the ensemble competition. Lowri Pugh-Morgan came third in the Solo competition. Elin Rees came third in the Song Composition competition.

Owain Jones and Heledd Watkins represented the School as members of the pop group Amheus in the BBC C2 competition in which they won first prize. Many radio playings have followed this and they are to record a television pop item. They also won second prize in the Urdd Eisteddfod. Heledd has also performed on the S4C Wedi 3 Programme. The group Amheus has recently performed on the S4C Wedi 3 Programme.

Lowri Pugh-Morgan was selected as a member of the National Youth Choir of Wales with a performance at the BBC London Proms this year. Teleri Walters was selected as a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. Harry Griffiths was selected to be a member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain.

Beshlie Thorp was recently seen singing on BBC 4 and BB2 in the Valley of Song programme and she has also been to Ireland as quest soloist with the Dyffryn Tywi male voice choir.
