Report to Governors and Parents 2007

Results

Once again our candidates achieved pleasing results in French in the external exams this summer. At A Level our only student achieved Grade C.  At AS Level, 4 candidates were entered, achieving Grades B (1), C (1) and D (2). In French at GCSE Level the A*- C pass rate was 57.9%. Our candidates were complemented once again by the external examiner on the excellent presentation of their coursework folders.

KS4 AND KS5

The Department is still very concerned about the fall in numbers of pupils studying French in KS4 within the option system.  Once again this year French was dropped from Option 3 (the "Creative" block) owing to budgeting and staffing issues.

In spite of this, numbers at KS5 remain consistent, as many students who have taken GCSE French appreciate the benefits of learning languages to a higher level of fluency, both in terms of future job prospects and opportunities for travel and work experiences abroad.

In Year 13, all 4 AS students are carrying on to A Level, with the intention of studying French as part of their chosen University courses. In Year 12, 3 students have chosen AS French and 4 students are enthusiastically rising to the considerable challenge of completing the GCSE Spanish course in 2 terms!

Staffing

  • Miss Isabelle Marquet was our assistante for the year. She was very well-organised and conscientious; she established a good rapport with pupils at all levels and proved to be a real asset to the Department. She completed her contract before Whitsun and has returned to France to sit her CAPES exam this summer. She is hoping to return to Llandovery to pay us a visit in the near future.
  • Mrs Pamela Marsh "retired" at the end of the Summer Term 2007 (although she is continuing to teach her 2 GCSE exam groups until May 2008) I would like to thank her for all her hard work and dedication in teaching French and Spanish to pupils at Ysgol Pantycelyn since January 1996. Whilst I wish her all the best for her retirement, Madame White very much regrets that this decision has been made at a time when Modern Languages are high on the political and educational list of concerns, both within Wales and wider afield. Understandably she fears that we are doing a grave disservice to our pupils in denying them the opportunity of being taught by a suitably qualified and experienced specialist teacher of French and Spanish. It is particularly disappointing that the school will no longer be able to offer a second foreign language.
