UKMT Team Challenge 2007

The team

On Wednesday 7th of March four pupils from Ysgol Pantycelyn travelled to Cardiff Uiniversity to take part in the regional final of the UKMT (UnitedKingdom Mathematics Trust) team challenge. Year 8 pupils Shaun McGill and Sara Evans along with year 9 pupils Ffion Davies and Carys Hughes, battled against over 30 other schools. After four gruelling rounds they finished in the top 10 teams, beating the overall winners in the 'head to head' round. Take a look at the gallery for more phots of the event.

Governors Report to Parents

We would like to thank Miss Emma Taylor for teaching in the department last year, we are sorry to lose her now to Biology, but we would like to congratulate her on her appointment as Head of Biology. In her place, we are very pleased to say that Mrs Gina Jones has now increased the number of Maths groups that she teaches.

In order to improve upon results of Yr 9 and Yr 10 Maths exams, a range of strategies have been adopted by the Head of Department to bring results back to the achievements of previous years.

The department achieved some very pleasing exam results that I would like to report as follows;

Year 11

At GCSE, 59% of all the pupils in regular attendance in Year 11 passed with a grade C or higher. 11 of these pupils have now started on the Maths A level course, which is a far higher number than usual. 2 pupils have also started on the Further Maths course.

Year 13

The 6 pupils sitting Maths A level achieved extremely good results, gaining 4 As, a B and a C, and the pupils are well deserving of such high marks.

2 pupils sat Further Maths A level, offered for the first time at Pantycelyn. They gained a B and a D grade. Further Maths is accepted to be 2 grades harder than other A levels, so this is equivalent to an A and a B. The pupils did extremely well when taking into consideration the unavoidable frequent absences of their teacher.

High ability pupils of all ages are given the chance to enter the UK Maths Challenges, and this years successes are as follows:-

Senior Maths Challenge; 1 Silver, 2 Bronze

Intermediate Maths Challenge; 4 Silver, 3 Bronze

Junior Maths Challenge; 3 Silver, 5 Bronze.

Children continue to be given the opportunity to play chess at dinnertimes in Room A- an activity proven to help improve thinking skills.
