History

Welcome to the History Department.

Once again the Department had excellent results at 'A' Level, with Ffion Morgan gaining an 'A' and Gareth Morgan a 'C'.

And at GCSE four students gained 'A*'s, four 'A's, two 'B's and five 'C's. Congratulations to all concerned.

We aim to teach the parts that other departments can't reach.

From Kings and Queens to dung collectors and chimney sweeps, Adolf Hitler to Martin Luther King, Bloody Mary to Harvey Wallbangers.....

Report to the Governors September 2007.

Once again this has been a highly successful year for the History department at Pantycelyn. Our two Advanced level students attained an "A" and a "C" grade respectively. Our A/S students are also on course to attain good grades next summer.

At GCSE level our students did well with 68% of the pupils attaining grades A* to C. Indeed over 36% achieved an "A" grade or above. Particularly pleasing was the performance of the Welsh medium set taught by Mr O Mainwaring with a 100% pass rate at grades A to C. The performance of our Entry level students was once again highly commended by the external examiner. My thanks to Mrs Felicity Walters for her outstanding work with this set. In the lower school Claire Eaglen continues to excel in promoting the subject so that our projected numbers for examination in 2007 are very healthy indeed.

Following on from our incredibly successful trip to Poland and Germany last year the standard was maintained by our recent visit to Flanders and the Somme in France. No one will forget the singing of the Welsh anthem at the memorial to the Welsh soldiers who fell at Mametz Wood, or the dignified service held at the grave of Hedd Wynn outside Ypres. Our students proved to be tremendous ambassadors for our school and for our country. My Thanks to the Headmaster for supporting this aspect of "the hidden curriculum" and indeed to Mr Mainwaring for organising the visit. The party contained 45 students and 4 members of staff.

To continue with the theme of external visits, our Year 9 students visited Big Pit Blaenavon last summer and this term we hope to organise a trip for Year 8 to The Tower of London. Once again my thanks to all members of the department for all their hard work this year.

Mr O Mainwaring Head Of The History Department
