As the result of a considerable amount of hard work, the Friends of Pantycelyn continued to go from strength to strength during 2006/7.
The year started with many of the Friends giving up their time on the weekend of September 15th, 16th and 17th in organising support for the 2006 Wales Rally GB car parking up on Eppynt.
The support of the Friends in our traditional Carol Service followed by Mince pies and coffee at the Castle Hotel was yet again a very enjoyable evening as indeed was the February Quiz night held in the School Hall.
The 2006/7 Friends calendar had sold fairly well and arrangements were made during the year for the publication of a similar calendar for 2007/8. The 200 Club was very active in helping to raise much needed funds for the school. No school should ever have to depend on the money raised by their ‘Friends' but any such funds can only enhance the opportunities we are able to offer our young people. For the forthcoming year, the Friends continue to work very hard, for which the Governing Body are very grateful, but there are many parents and staff who take little interest. Remember, the Friends exist for the benefit of everyone at Pantycelyn - and that includes you!!
As an 11-18 LEA funded Comprehensive School we are funded via a Local Management of School (LMS) formula which is approved by the Welsh Office and is the responsibility of Carmarthenshire County Council.
Continued pressure by central government on Local Education Authorities has resulted in funding difficulties which affect all schools. This pressure on the funding of education places a greater responsibility on the shoulders of the Governors and Staff in schools to ensure that the very limited funding available is used in the most cost effective manner for the benefit of all pupils.
I can assure you that we will do our utmost to ensure the widest possible curriculum choices within the budget available and that all possible avenues are being explored to maximise revenue in the future to meet curricular demand.
The Sixth form in Pantycelyn carry our flag of excellence and is a testimony to the quality of young people in school, new common room facilities, the standard of teaching and curricular flexibility that we now have 82 young people in the sixth form.
More recently, changes in methods of funding sixth forms in Wales via DELLS have brought further concerns regarding the budgets of comprehensive schools for years 12 and 13 students.
The work of the Headteacher, teaching and support staff is greatly appreciated especially as we become more and more aware of the ever changing demands on schools.
The number of pupils on roll in September 2006 was 404 and the number of teaching staff in the School for the academic year 2006-2007 was 35 (including the Headteacher). There were 31 full time teachers and 4 part-time teachers.
A financial statement for the year 1st April, 2006 to 31st March, 2007 is attached.
No resolutions were passed in last year's Governors Annual Report to Parents.
The school updates its Prospectus every year and the current copy is always available in the Main Office.
Information on Curriculum and other matters is made available to parents by means of the School Prospectus, Parents' Evening for each year group, and circular letters from the Headteacher and Friends of the School events. Particular emphasis is placed on disseminating information prior to entry into Year 7, before making decisions on subject options for Years 10 and 11 and on choice of courses and subject combinations if pupils decide to return to School post 16 into years 12 and 13.
Year 7 pupils have settled in well, scoring highly on our positive rewarding merit scheme and showing good team spirit during the inter form rounders tournament.
Indeed the rounders tournament has proved to be a big hit throughout Key stage 3 with the majority of pupils participating in the after school matches. Team spirit has developed as well as a healthy competitive edge from both pupils and Staff!
During a day of ‘Dysgu a Hwyl' Year 7 pupils welcomed all of the Year 6 pupils from our family of schools.
Supported by a Community focus grant and the Menter Bro Dinefwr pupils participated in a range of workshops. Healthy burgers were cooked to perfection with the help of Cegin Fach Y Wlad and were enjoyed with various coleslaw recipes. Pupils also developed their awareness of fire safety in the home with Carmarthenshire Fire Brigade who staged a very dramatic chip pan fire.
Drama and sporting workshops were also undertaken.
Mrs Forsyth has visited the majority of our primary schools during this first half term, meeting pupils and discussing current practise and new initiatives with staff which have been most supportive and enthusiastic about embracing the year ahead.
What's to come.....in brief
In addition, the School holds regular parents' evenings, Open Evening and Induction Evening for parents of new entrants into Year 7. The school has very recently improved our use of a Contact Book by the introduction of a comprehensive Student Planner to improve the communication between home and school.
Following on from our very successful school inspection in March last year, it was very pleasing to read the Inspectors very positive comments in the summary and full reports that were published last June. We are particularly proud of the top grade awarded for the care, guidance and support of our young people. The excellent grades awarded in terms of the achievement of learners and the effectiveness of teaching, training and assessment, both of which at 100% and 98% already exceed the targets set by the Welsh Assembly Government of 95%, are similar testament to the commendable efforts of everyone at Pantycelyn, pupils, staff, parents and Governors.
Can I therefore remind you of the minor amendments to our School Development Plan in relation to the seven recommendations put forward by Mrs Margaret Robertson and her team.
Recommendation 1
"Maintain the outstanding and good standards achieved."
As far as this recommendation is concerned, every aspect of our development plan seeks to build on the existing strengths of the school and to improve further the quality of education provided for our young people.

In addition, the School holds regular parents' evenings, Open Evening and Induction Evening for parents of new entrants into Year 7. The school has very recently improved our use of a Contact Book by the introduction of a comprehensive Student Planner to improve the communication between home and school.

Recommendation 2
"Reduce the gap in examination performance between boys and girls especially in the core subjects at key stage 4."
This is already a key feature of our existing plan and it is reassuring to note that in the 2007 GCSE exams, Pantycelyn boys were 2% point ahead of the boys in Carmarthenshire, and 6% points ahead of the boys of Wales in terms of their 5A*-C grades. It is also very pleasing to report that 17 of the 43 who returned to year 12 in September 2007 are boys. These ongoing improvements are testament to the approaches taken by all departments to adapt and modify the topics being studied to suit boys as well as girls.
Recommendation 3
"Secure a clearer role for learners in assessing and evaluating their own work."
We are now extending the involvement of learners in their own learning by building upon the successful self assessments in the end of year reports and recent developments in the pupils progress file, ongoing target setting and the much improved student planners introduced in September 2006.
Recommendation 4
"Ensure that the school:
• meets the requirements for information technology as a subject in key stage 3
• raises standards in information and communication technology across the curriculum throughout the school."
As of September 2006 ICT lessons have been timetabled for all pupils in years 7, 8 and 9. Pupils will now be in a stronger position to proceed with ICT at GCSE and the recently introduced GCE in the Sixth Form.
Recommendation 5
"Ensure that the processes of whole school and departmental self-evaluation are focused, rigorous and based on first hand evidence and lead to development plans which are monitored against clear targets and benchmarked criteria."
We have also invested in new ICT based assessment and reporting software which will allow reliable data on individual pupils, groups and/or individual subject areas to be monitored against previous attainments and the targets set for continued improvements in the academic achievements of every pupil. Over time these can be benchmarked against local and national statistics.
Departments are now more focused on their self evaluation roles and much has been done this term in terms of the value of added analysis of individual departments.
Recommendation 6
"Ensure that managers at all levels have sufficient time and resources to fulfil their departmental and whole school responsibilities."
Since September 2006 PPA time has been integrated into the contact time of teaching staff to release more time for departmental and whole school developments, and 2 cover assistants have been employed to cover for absent teachers. Examination invigilators are also employed to cover all external and some internal examinations.
Recommendation 7
"Ensure that the school complies with the statutory requirements:
• to provide religious education in the sixth form
• to report on information technology in Y7, Y8 and Y9."
The current school timetable has been changed to allow the regular delivery of religious education through mini conferences, visits and seminars for students in Year 12 and 13.
End of year reports on the ICT experiences of all pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 now established.
Everyone at Pantycelyn is committed to a culture of continuous improvement and these amendments to the school development plan for 2006-2009 are intended to support the ongoing efforts at Pantycelyn to grow from being a "good school" to becoming an outstanding one.
Staffing 2006-2007
Miss Anne Jenkins was appointed as a teacher of Food Technology and Catering from September 2006. Mrs Renata Bolek, Mrs Kim Jones and Mrs Sheree Stephens also joined the teaching support team the school during the 2006-07 academic year.

Trwy lawer o waith caled, mae Ffrindiau'r Ysgol wedi parhau i dyfu o nerth i nerth yn ystod 2006/7.
Dechreuodd y flwyddyn gyda nifer o'r Ffrindiau yn ildio eu hamser hamdden ar benwythnos 15, 16 ac 17eg Medi er mwyn trefnu cefnogaeth i Rali GB Cymru 2006.
Roedd cefnogaeth y Ffrindiau yn ein Gwasanaeth Carolau traddodiadol a'r mins peis a choffi a ddilynwyd hyn yng Ngwesty'r Castell yn noson bleserus unwaith eto fel oedd y Noson Gwis a gynhaliwyd yn Neuadd yr Ysgol ym mis Chwefror.
Gwerthodd Calendr y Ffrindiau yn lled dda yn ystod 2006/7 a threfnwyd cyhoeddiad tebyg ar gyfer 2007/8. Roedd y clwb 200 yn weithredol iawn yn helpu i godi arian anghenus ar gyfer yr ysgol. Ni ddylai ysgol orfod dibynnu ar arian a godir gan ei ‘Ffrindiau' ond mae cronfa fel hyn yn gwella'r cyfleoedd a gynigiwn i'n pobl ifanc. Ar gyfer eleni, mae'r Ffrindiau yn parhau i weithio'n galed ac mae'r Corff Llywodraethol yn ddiolchgar iawn am hyn, ond mae llawer o rieni a staff nad ydynt yn ymddiddori yn y gweithgareddau. Cofiwch, mae'r Ffrindiau yn bodoli er lles pawb yn Ysgol Pantycelyn - ac mae hynny'n eich cynnwys chi!
Fel Ysgol Gyfun 11 - 18 dan yr A.A.Ll, fe'n cyllidir trwy Reolaeth Lleol Ysgolion (R.Ll.Y.) a gymeradwyir gan y Swyddfa Gymreig ac sy'n gyfrifoldeb Cyngor Sir Gâr.
Mae pwysau parhaol y llywodraeth ganolog ar Awdurdodau Addysg Lleol wedi golygu anawsterau cyllidol sy'n effeithio ar bob ysgol. Mae'r pwysau hwn ar gyllido canolfannau addysgiadol yn gosod mwy o gyfrifoldeb ar ysgwyddau Llywodraethwyr a Staff ysgolion er mwyn sicrhau y defnyddir cyllid cyfyng iawn yn y ffordd orau posibl er lles y disgyblion i gyd.
Gallaf eich sicrhau y byddwn yn gwneud ein gorau glas i sicrhau'r dewis ehangaf yn y cwricwlwm gan ystyried y cyllid sydd ar gael. Ymchwili'r pob maes posibl er mwyn cael y cyllid mwyaf yn y dyfodol i ateb y cwricwlwm .
Mae Chweched Dosbarth Ysgol Pantycelyn yn arwydd o safon uchel yr ysgol ac yn dysteb i adnoddau'r ystafell gyffredin newydd a safon yr addysgu hyblyg yw'r ffaith bod gennym 82 myfyriwr yn y chweched dosbarth ar hyn o bryd.
Yn ddiweddar, mae'r newidadau a gafwyd gan DELLS yn y cyllid a geir ar gyfer y chweched dosbarth wedi creu pryderon pellach am y cyllid a gaiff ysgolion cyfun.
Gwerthfawrogir yn fawr waith y Prifathro a'r staff dysgu a chynnal yn arbennig pan ddown yn gynyddol ymwybodol o'r newidadau cyson mewn ysgolion.
Rhif y disgyblion ar y gofrestr ym mis Medi 2006 oedd 404 a rhif yr athrawon dysgu yn yr ysgol am y flwyddyn academaidd 2006-2007 oedd 35 (gan gynnwys y Prifathro). Roedd 31 o athrawon llawn amser a 4 athro rhan amser.
Atodir datganiad ariannol am y flwyddyn Ebrill 1af, 2006 i Fawrth 31ain, 2007.
Ni chafwyd unrhyw benderfyniadau yn Adroddiad Blynyddol y Llywodraethwyr llynedd.
Mae'r ysgol yn diweddaru ei Phrospectws yn flynyddol ac mae'r copi diweddaraf ar gael bob amser yn Swyddfa'r Ysgol. Hysbysir rhieni am y Cwricwlwm a materion eraill trwy gyfrwng Prospectws yr Ysgol, Nosweithiau Rhieni i bob blwyddyn, cylchlythyrau oddi wrth y Prifathro a thrwy'r gweithgareddau a drefnir gan Ffrindiau'r Ysgol. Rhoddir pwyslais arbennig ar ledaenu gwybodaeth cyn mynediad i Flwyddyn 7, cyn penderfynu ar bynciau dewisol ym mlynyddoedd 10 ac 11 ac ar ddewis cyrsiau a dewis cyfuniadau pynciau pan fo disgyblion yn penderfynu dychwelyd i'r ysgol ar ôl 16 mlwydd oed i flynyddoedd 12 a 13.
Cyfnod Allweddol 3: Anwythiad a Throsglwyddiad
Mae disgyblion Blwyddyn 7 wedi ymsefydlu'n dda, gan ennill sgôr uchel yn ein cynllun gwobrwyo cadarnhaol a dangos ymwybyddiaeth dda o weithio fel tîm yn ystod y twrnamaint rownderi rhwng y dosbarthiadau.
Yn wir bu'r twrnamaint rownderi yn hynod boblogaidd drwy Cyfnod Allweddol 3 gyda mwyafrif y disgyblion yn rhan o'r gemau ar ôl ysgol. Datblygwyd ymwybyddiaeth o dîm yn ogystal 6a chystadleuaeth iach ar ran y staff a'r disgyblion!
Yn ystod ein diwrnod o ‘Ddysgu a hwyl' croesawodd disgyblion Blwyddyn 7 holl ddisgyblion Blwyddyn 6 ein teulu o ysgolion. Gyda chefnogaeth grant Cymunedol a menter Bro Dinefwr roedd y disgyblion yn cyfrannu i ystod o weithdai. Coginiwyd byrgers iach yn berffaith gyda chymorth Gegin fach y Wlad. Mwynhawyd hwy gyda rysetiau coleslaw amrywiol. Datblygwyd ymwybyddiaeth y disgyblion o ddiogelwch tân yn y cartref wrth i Frigâd Dân Sir Gaerfyrddin lwyfannu t6an mewn sosban sglodion yn ddramatig iawn. Cafwyd gweithdai drama a chwaraeon hefyd.
Mae Mrs Forsyth wedi ymweld â mwyafrif ein hysgolion cynradd yn ystod hanner cyntaf y tymor gan gyfarfod y disgyblion a thrafod arfer cyfredol a mentrau newydd gyda'r staff sydd wedi bod yn gefnogol a brwdfrydig iawn am weithgareddau'r flwyddyn nesaf.
Ar y gorwel ........ yn gryno
Cynhelir yn ogystal yn yr Ysgol nosweithiau rhieni yn rheolaidd, Noson Agored a Noson Anwythiad i rieni disgyblion newydd Blwyddyn 7. Yn ddiweddar, mae'r ysgol wedi gwella'r defnydd o'r Llyfr Cyswllt trwy gyflwyno Cynllunydd cynhwysfawr ar gyfer y myfyrwyr er mwyn gwella'r cyswllt rhwng yr ysgol a'r cartref.
Yn dilyn arolwg llwyddiannus o'r ysgol ym mis Mawrth llynedd, roedd yn bleser darllen sylwadau cadarnhaol iawn yr Arolygwyr yn y crynodeb a'r adroddiad llawn a gyhoeddwyd ym mis Mehefin.
Rydym yn ymfalchio'n arbennig yn y radd uchaf a ddyfarnwyd am ein gofal a'n cefnogaeth o'n pobl ifanc. Roedd y graddau ardderchog a ddyfarnwyd ym nhermau cyflawniad ac effeithiolrwydd y dysgu, yr hyfforddi a'r asesu, y ddau ohonynt ar 100% a 98% eisoes yn rhagori ar y targedau o 95% a osodwyd gan Lywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru, yn brawf pellach o ymdrechion clodwiw pawb ym Mhantycelyn; disgyblion, staff, rhieni a Llywodraethwyr.
Erbyn hyn gallwn eich hysbysu am y newidiadau bach i Gynllun Datblygu'r Ysgol gan ystyried y saith argymhelliad a gynigiwyd gan Mrs Margaret Robertson a'i thîm.
Argymhelliad 1
"Cynnal y safonau rhagorol a da a gyflawnir."
Gyda'r argymhelliad hwn, mae pob agwedd o'n cynllun datblygu yn ceisio adeiladu ar y cryfderau sy'n bodoli eisoes yn yr ysgol a gwella ymhellach ansawdd yr addysg a ddarperir i'n pobl ifanc.
Argymhelliad 2
"Lleihau'r bwlch ym mherfformiad bechgyn a merched mewn arholiadau, yn enwedig yn y pynciau craidd yng nghyfnod allweddol 4."
Mae hyn eisoes yn nodwedd ganolog o'r cynllun cyfredol ac mae'n galonogol nodi bod bechgyn Pantycelyn 2% pwynt o flaen bechgyn Sir Gâr yn arholiad TGAU 2007 a 6% pwynt o flaen bechgyn Cymru yn nhermau eu graddau A* - C. Gwelir gwahaniaethau cyffelyb yn y 5 canran A* - G ( 91%, 84% yn ôl eu trefn).
Mae'n bleser adrodd hefyd mai bechgyn yw 17 o'r 43 a ddychwelodd i Flwyddyn 12 eleni.
Yn arholiadau Safon Uwch 2007 perfformiodd ein bechgyn ni yn well na ffigwr Sir Gaerfyrddin a Chymru gyfan ar gyfer Graddau A* - C ( 67%, 66% a 64% yn ôl eu trefn) ac ar gyfer Graddau A - E (100%, 93% a 93% yn ôl eu trefn).
Mae'r gwelliannau cyfredol hyn yn brawf o ddulliau pob adran i addasu a diwygio'r testunau a astudir i apelio at fechgyn a merched.
Argymhelliad 3
"Sicrhau swyddogaeth fwy eglur ar gyfer disgyblion a myfyrwyr wrth asesu ac arfarnu eu gwaith eu hunain."
Bwriadwn ehangu ymglymiad y dysgwyr yn eu dysgu eu hunain trwy adeiladu ar yr hunain asesiadau llwyddiannus a geir yn adroddiadau diwedd y flwyddyn a'r datblygiadau diweddar yn ffeiliau cynnydd y disgyblion, gosod targedau cyfredol a'r cynllunwyr myfyrwyr gwell a gyflwynwyd ym mis Medi 2006.
Argymhelliad 4
"Sicrhau bod yr ysgol yn:
cyfarfod â'r gofynion ar gyfer technoleg gwybodaeth fel pwnc yng nghyfnod allweddol 3
codi safonau mewn technoleg gwybodaeth a chyfathrebu ar draws y cwricwlwm trwy'r ysgol."
Ers mis Medi 2006 amserlennwyd gwersi TGCh i bob disgybl ym mlynyddoedd 7, 8 a 9. Bydd disgyblion nawr mewn safle well i barhau astudio TGCh a'r lefel TGAU a'r arholiad uwch newydd yn y chweched dosbarth.
Argymhelliad 5
"Sicrhau bod gan y prosesau hunan-arfarnu ysgol gyfan ac adrannol ffocws, eu bod yn drylwyr, wedi eu sylfaenu ar dystiolaeth uniongyrchol, ac yn arwain at gynlluniau datblygu sy'n cael eu monitro yn erbyn targedau clir a meini prawf meincnodol."
Erbyn hyn rydym wedi buddsoddi mewn meddalwedd newydd ar gyfer TGCh wedi ei sylfaenu ar asesu ac adrodd. Bydd hyn yn ein ata golygu ein bod yn gallu monitro data dibynadwy ar ddisgyblion unigol, grwpiau a / neu pynciau unigol yn erbyn cyraeddiadau blaenorol a'r targedau a osodwyd ar gyfer gwelliannau parhaol yng nghyraeddiadau academaidd pob disgybl. Dros gyfnod o amser gellir meincnodi hyn yn erbyn ystadegau lleol a chenedlaethol.
Erbyn hyn mae adrannau wedi ffocysu'n fwy ar ei hunan werthusiad a gwnaethpwyd llawer y tymor hwn i ystyried gwerthusiad gwerth uchwanegol adrannau unigol.
Argymhelliad 6
"Sicrhau bod gan reolwyr ar bob lefel ddigon o amser ac adnoddau i gyflawni eu cyfrifoldebau adrannol ac ysgol gyfan."
Ers mis Medi 2006 gweithredwyd gwelliannau sylweddol i sicrhau y clustnodir yn rheolaidd amser i weithio ar ddatblygiad adrannol ac ysgol gyfan, a chyflogwyd dwy cynorthwy-ydd i ofalu am wersi athrawon sy'n absennol. Cyflogir arolygwyr arholiadau i ofalu am bob arholiad allanol a rhai arholiadau mewnol.
Argymhelliad 7
"Sicrhau bod yr ysgol yn cydymffurfio â gofynion statudol:
Addaswyd cwricwlwm cyfredol yr ysgol i ganiatáu mewnbwn rheolaidd o addysg grefyddol trwy gyfrwng cynadleddau byr, ymweliadau a seminarau i fyfyrwyr Blynyddoedd 12 a 13.
Rhoddir adroddiad diwedd y blwyddyn ar brofiadau TGCh i bob disgybl ym mlynyddoedd 7, 8 a 9.
Fel y gwyddoch, mae pawb yn Ysgol Pantycelyn wedi ymrwymo i ddiwylliant o wellhad parhaol a bwriedir i'r diwygiadau hyn i gynllun datblygu'r ysgol ar gyfer 2006 - 2009 gefnogi'r ymdrechion parhaol yn Ysgol Pantycelyn i gamu o fod yn "ysgol dda" i fod yn ysgol wych.
Staffio 2006-2007.
Penodwyd Miss Anne Jenkins i ddysgu Technoleg Bwyd a Choginio o mis Fedi 2006 ymlaen. Hefyd, ymunodd Mrs Renata Bolek, Miss Kim Jones a Mrs Sheree Stephens a thîm cynorthwywyr dysgu yr ysgol yn ystod y flwyddyn academaidd 2006-07.
